Hold up. Did I just kick that guy? How did I do that? How do I do it again?
Pretty much everyone who’s played Dark Souls 3 has had these questions running through their brain. And since Dark Souls doesn’t make a habit of teaching players how to do things, we’ve put together a short guide on how to kick in ds3.
In this post, you’ll learn:
- How to kick in Dark Souls 3 (for Xbox and Ps4)
- The best times to use kicks in combat
- How to get your kicks to deal more damage (this will blow your mind)

Here’s how to kick in Dark Souls 3
On Xbox, you’ll push forward on the left stick and then, almost immediately after, press the right bumper (the standard button for light attacks).

On PS4, you’ll push the left stick forward and then, almost immediately after, press the L1 button.
Your character will then kick forward with his or her right leg, assuming you have a weapon equipped that allows kicking (most weapons do).
A few tips for kicking more effectively in Dark Souls 3:
- You’ll need to be standing pretty close to your enemy.
- It’s much easier to successfully land a kick if you’re locked on to your target.
- It’s takes a few reps to get the timing down with a Dark Souls 3 kick. So you might want to practice on weaker enemies before trying it on a high damage foe.
When to use a kick in ds3
Dark Souls 3 kicks don’t deal any damage (unless you’re wearing the Armor of Thorns), but they’re helpful for two primary reasons.
1. Kicks move your target, allowing you to...oh, I don’t know...knock enemies off a cliff!
2. Kicks can break an enemy’s shield guard, making it possible for you to perform a riposte (a critical hit that deals a high amount of damage).
When an enemy hides behind a shield, incoming strikes deal what is commonly referred to as “stamina damage.” While this doesn’t affect the enemy’s health bar, when their stamina reaches zero, their guard will be “broken,” leaving them vulnerable to a riposte. (Ripostes are kind of like backstabs — to land one, you have to be squared up with your enemy. So don’t expect to get one every time.)
Dark Souls 3 Kicks are specially designed to deal high amounts of stamina damage (significantly more than most weapons) which makes them effective against enemies who hide behind their shields. Remember this if you’re in a PVP fight against an opponent who likes to turtle!
It’s worth noting that stronger enemies won’t always be staggered by one kick. In some cases, chaining multiple kicks can lead to a stagger, but unless your enemy is really hunkered down, you’ll usually have better options than karate. And you probably won’t want to use a kick in a boss fight.

Dark Souls 3 Ps4 Hack
Surprisingly, the stamina damage of a Dark Souls 3 kick is based on how upgraded of a weapon you’re holding.
So, for example, if you kick a Lothric knight while holding a dagger +9, you’ll break his shield in one shot.
But, if you try kicking with a weapon that isn’t upgraded (even a greatsword), you’ll need multiple kicks to stagger the knight.
This is also true in player vs player (PVP) combat.

Oddly enough, the extra stamina damage from an upgraded weapon will only apply if the weapon is equipped in your right hand (or if you’re two handing).
Go kick some stuff!
